WOMAD SUMMER SCHOOL 2009
10/06/2009

Hi Everybody:

As I write this short blog I am listening to the fourth composition (saippuakivikauppias) that we have set up for mixing here, at Real World Studios. One idea that has crossed my mind continually is to work with percussion and vocals by sitting with interested drummers who might want to better understand how to control various aspects of their ability to play in 'sync' or in time with themselves. Much of what drummers do within a musical composition has to do with timing. 'When' to play 'What' drum and 'How much' pressure or attack should be applied to a specific surface so as to extract a suitable musical effect.

When you sing or speak a sound that emulates the tone that you are seeking from your instrument during any performance this is much like hearing the performance in your mind before physically doing it. At the WOMAD Summer School I will be exploring this concept and other ideas with Justin Adams and Dr. Joel and the crew from AVID/Sibelius in late July. We will work in real time with rhythm section associated players including professional and amateur alike over the 5 day period. The beauty of all this is that we can "SEE" all that we do as we play via Sibelius thus we learn the language of music in a natural way.

It would be great to see you there as we have places available for all who would be interested. Hope to see you there.

The dates for WOMAD SUMMER SCHOOL is July 27, through 31, 2009.

Regards,
